Safety relief valves are ideal depressurizing relieving valves. Particularly in the case of liquids, their wide proportional range leads to continuous action and depressurizing of pressure peaks, without the immediate discharge of such a large quantity as a full lift safety valve. However, after a long proportional phase they become full lift in nature, thereby achieving a greater mass flow than pure relief valves of the same size. They are also used as overflow valves in cases in which the capacity of a relief valve would no longer be sufficient.
