Silvery, extremely heavy liquid. Highly toxic by skin absorption and inhalation of fumes and vapors. Used in thermometers and barometers, draft indicators, tank gauges for registration purpose, and in some gyro compasses as a ballistic pendulum. Also used in mercury vapor lamps, arc lamps, and boilers.
